The Ohoopee River snakes across a hundred miles of Georgia’s interior. A small portion of that hundred runs through the southern section of Emanuel county. I have many fond memories of my grandfather taking me to swim in that bourbon brown branch water. There are some sections where the sand glistens like copper tinged snow beneath the surface and other portions (the deeper portions) where the darkness would swallow you whole and every bump beneath the surface was surely a gator, a monster sized catfish or a serpent swimming below. The bottom is made up of deep holes, fallen trees, sand and the occasional limestone shelf. These days, I find myself back on the river with friends that have grown up on that water. Their knowledge of the twists and turns, fabled deep holes and fishing spots continue to allow me to make memories on that dark tannin soaked ribbon of water.
